I have been hunkered down at the grand opening of a new casino. As it turns out, no heat and a big comeback win were two of my Christmas miracles this year. I am always surprised when that happens. Particularly when the owner himself recently backed me off at a sister casino down the road.
When it comes to plundering casinos, the holiday season can be the most plunderful time of the year. Holidays, celebrations, and special events always represent special opportunities to card counters. Distractions abound.

Your counterparts in the pit are human, and are forced to deal with the same sort of disruptions that the holidays bring you. They are busy with gift shopping, sluggish with holiday ham, and tired from spending time with (and/or avoiding) family. The kids are out of school. Seasonal church events, work parties, and festivities of all kinds always put mental energy for work duties on the back burner. Everyone is slacking off a bit from the floor to the surveillance room, thinking of vacation days and just surviving to the new year. Owners are on holiday. Second stringers and temporaries are holding down the fort. Pit bosses are watching bowl games and pro games with playoff implications.

Add to that the sliver of good will toward humanity and general seasonal merriment everyone feels inclined to participate in and it often adds up to letting things slide with regards to catching and ousting card counters.

May your Christmas stocking be stuffed with cash, and may your New Year’s Resolution involve a bigger and brighter sacking of the casinos in 2012.

—Loudon Ofton

This sent the city on a fast track to growth and prosperity until 2005 when Katrina hit and slowed it back down. Gaming has played an integral part in the rebuilding effort along the gulf ever since. That being said, here’s the break down on places to play in the DEEP SOUTH!

Keep in mind: with the casino industry in general struggling in this area there tend to be more coupons and special promotions going on. Keep your eyes out for easy and profitable ways to increase EV!

Biloxi is a great place to play simply because all the casinos are in a relatively close proximity to one another. This can help facilitate short and frequent sessions if you are that kind of player.

Beau Rivage - You can’t miss this massive establishment along the “strip” of Biloxi. It’s a MGM property so be cautious if you have a past with them. They do have the best pits for table hopping and wonging around. This is also the only store in town to offer Late Surrender on their 6D.

Hard Rock Casino – Opened in 2007, the hotel is awesome (in true Hard Rock fashion). You’ll find one of the best DD games in town here with about 70% penetration and decent rules; and they offer stand 17 on their 6D game! Don’t forget to check out Ruth’s Chris Steak House here for an amazing meal.

Isle of Capri – Reports of a 4 deck stand 17 game draw me in here. Check it out and report back!

Treasure Bay – Hit this place up for their DD. Although the pen has decreased over time, it’s still a great game especially with Stand 17.

If you find the above places “inhospitable” just cruise around town and hit up these tasty temptations as well: Palace Casino, IP Biloxi, Boomtown, and Grand Casino. All beatable games! Remember, with so many places close together don’t be afraid to shop around for good conditions. If things are packed out and dealers are cutting too much off the shoe, head down the street and find something better.

Looking to extend your trip / vacation? Bay St. Louis is a mere 40 minutes away and has a few more places: Hollywood South, Silver Slipper, and Island View (Gulfport). Even more? Well then you’ve got to hit up New Orleans! (But we’ll keep that for another post.)

Have fun in the South! The people are great, weather beautiful and the food can be unbelievable! A special thanks to SouthAP0407 for some on the spot scouting.

The money moves fast. When I lose count of the chips stuffed in my pockets or the cash I have extracted from them, or just when I need to dodge a little heat, compose myself, or strategize, I retire to my office—the casino bathroom.

In addition to its traditional offerings, the bathroom stall is every counter’s respite—often the only place in the casino without those pesky eyes in the sky following your every move. I don’t know how many millions of collective dollars I have unpacked, counted, recounted, rubber-banded and tried not to pee on inside these stained walls. Don’t drop that thousand dollar chip, because it has a mind for rolling into the next stall and then the scramble is on.

If you have never poured out a Budweiser into the toilet and refilled the bottle with water, you haven’t lived. Well you have lived, maybe quite well, but you have never lived as a shrewd card counter. Just don’t spill your water-filled Budweiser at the table like Ben once did. Oops!

A few stalls—the Wynn and Venetian in Las Vegas come to mind—have doors that go all the way to the floor. Privacy is nice when you are pulling 40 grand out of your socks. A ledge is nice, but more often than not, the top of the toilet paper dispenser is your only hope if you are looking for something resembling a flat surface to stack chips on. I hate automatic-flush toilets. God help me if I ever drop a chip into that bowl and am forced into a quick-draw duel with the hair-trigger sensor. It’s bad enough that while I am counting chips the toilet is flushing the whole time. Other patrons must think I ate at the buffet. Which brings to mind what I hear most while I am in there—buffet cursing, sports cursing, and casino-took-my-money cursing. I once heard a cellphone ringing one stall over. “This is the wolfman,” the man answered with a grunt. That explains the smell, I thought.

Here’s a fun fact—I have never been backed off in a bathroom. But I have been followed into a few, so keep your wits about you.

Tonight I had a handicapped stall to myself. The bigger office is always preferred. I had plenty of space to count, rubber-band, and re-pocket. Ten minutes later I sauntered out, and was met with the scowl and crossed arms of a man waiting in a wheelchair.

When the GPS beeped with the announcement that I had arrived at my destination I pulled over and looked around. I was on a dusty road with empty desert in all directions. GPS is great, but never let it be the substitute for advance planning.

More than once I have been led to a casino’s administrative building, tribal gaming office, or an outdated address. One time I was led to a KFC. They had no table games, but they did have a Double Down sandwich, which I DID NOT eat. I am a card counter, not a gambler.

Prepare for a trip in such a way that you can find your way without GPS. You never know when your phone will decide it can’t get a signal, or conk out altogether because you dropped it in the airport garage. Use casino websites. Map everything out in advance. Know drive times and where the casinos are in relation to one another so you can make the most efficient travel decisions.

When I get into town, I tend to start at either the casino with the best game, or the casino closest to the airport. From there I have my options mapped out on one sheet of paper. Nothing is clumsier or more time consuming than fumbling with a map on the side of the road. Hands-free driving is best. Be sure you know what texting or cell phone usage laws exist in the state or city to which you are traveling.

Many factors inform my choices in how I launch a regional blackjack assault, from reported conditions to drive times to available lodging nearby (I don’t get those sweet comps so much anymore). As I play, new factors continue to inform my choices, from new information I have received about local games to traffic conditions to whether I suspect I have been flyered.

Remember, the longer you play, the more assured you are that you will be victorious for your career. Trip efficiency is crucial to getting maximum hours each time out and working towards that long run victory.

I hope you’ve been out in the trenches, making your own set of war stories at the casinos! I’ve started a journal of my favorite card counting stories so that I don’t forget them over the years; maybe I’ll turn them into an e-book one of these days. You should be doing the same!

Anyway, 2 pieces of news we wanted to share with you:

Thanks to the enormous response regarding the iPhone app! We gave out all of our available free licenses, and we’ve really valued the feedback. Our programmers are hard at work making improvements, adding features, and making it available for iPad as well. We couldn’t make the improvements without your input!

Our next Bootcamp is scheduled for August 20th! Mark your calendars, set some money aside from your bankroll, and get ready to meet us in Vegas if you want the best hands on blackjack card counting training on earth! To keep the training quality high, we’re capping these bootcamps at 10 spots. We’ll give you more information soon, but the sign up will only be available for 48 hours, so make sure you’re ready to get one of the spots when we open it up!

And while I have your attention, let me leave you with one story:

I was playing some Double Deck Blackjack at a beloved tribal casino, and with a fresh shoe, I saw that the back card was an Ace. The dealer asked me to cut the cards, so like a master surgeon, I VERY carefully cut exactly 3 cards from the back of the shoe, then placed $1,000 on my bet circle. The dealer then moved those 3 cards to the front of the shoe. The first card was the burn card, the second card went to the player sitting before me at first base, then, BAM!, I get the Ace. With all the enthusiasm of a regular gambler, I start shouting, “Face card! Face card!” Dealer deals my second card…FACE CARD! $1,500 blackjack!

The moral of the story: Card Counting is one of the tools we Advantage Players use to get the advantage over the casino. Think outside the box and learn all the ways to turn the casinos’ games against themselves!

Saving the World One Card at a Time,

As it grew, I was betting more and more money, and was actually really thrilled when I got to experience my first backoff. It was like I had officially entered the elite club of professional card counters! But as my welcome slowly wore off at casinos, so did the thrill of getting backed off. I was quickly making a decent living off the local casinos, and I hated to see any of them shut their doors to me. But it’s a part of the job.

Now there was one poorly run casino that I loved playing at more than almost any other. For a while, I was completely anonymous as far as they were concerned. But when I had my first 5-digit win, I figured I was no longer a nobody to them. I don’t know if it was the adrenaline from making more in one night than my car was worth, but for some stupid reason, on my way out of the casino, I walked straight up to the Head of Casino Operations and thanked him for running such a fine establishment. Hey, I figured he knew who I was, so I might as well introduce myself. He kind of muttered something under his breath, and I headed out to my car. I got about halfway through the parking lot and two security guards came running after me yelling. NI thought, “oh no, the gig is up. But why are they chasing me to my car? Oh $#@%!”

My heart was pounding as the security guards, who each outweighed me by about 100 pounds (and carried guns), asked me my name said they needed my ID. Crap! Are they going to take it and flyer me to other casinos?!? They look at it, hand it back, and say, “Ok. We just needed to make sure you were over 21.” Apparently I wasn’t as infamous at that casino as I thought… they just thought it was odd at a kid who looked 17 just won nearly a year’s wages.

Here is the moral of the story… Actually. I don’t think there is one. Just be smart, don’t lose your cool, and remember you are playing their game by their rules.

Now get back out there and make some of your own great Blackjack Stories!!!
